Composed and performed in the sauna, the music of Saunatime magically comes to life in the steamroom's unique ambience. Inspired by memories of a late grandfather, the songs reflect the enduring facets of our most treasured blessing and yet most fateful curse - human emotion. Propelled by powerful vocal arrangements, Saunatime speaks to all of us with tales of goodness, obsession, revenge and redemption - tales that resonate in the key of life. Autobiography

Like a lot of Canadian males, I grew up contemplating rather varied and ambitious careers. I pictured myself embodying a range of quintessential Canadian icons . . . hockey star, rock music virtuoso, solitary canoeist/explorer and all around bon vivant. Well, I did play hockey but I didn't exactly re-define the meaning of excellence on ice. And I did get exposed to music at an early age but practicing Boris Stroganov's Piano Sonata # 700 while abjectly watching my friends play street hockey became ever more intolerable.( Thankfully, guitars and garage bands would follow, along with occasional gigs in obscure bars.) And although I did inherit the family's treasured cedar strip Chestnut canoe, I never permanently retreated to roam the backwoods like some Canadian incarnation of Shane.

And like a multitude of others, my life has lurched and veered along and I suppose that it really is unfolding as it should. Eventually, I found myself in the profession of teaching and since there are probably ten million teacher related works of literature, I won't add my wild adventures to that list. Instead, I'll talk about Saunatime. Go to main Autobiography.

About Saunatime

The background literature included with the Saunatime cd explains the family oriented historical theme, which sets out to explore the impact and timelessness of a variety of human emotions. I decided to set some parameters for the recording process . . .

I chose to record and mix in our sauna in an attempt to capture the feel of that storied little room. In an effort to allow each song to actually be sung live by a small group of vocalists, I limited all songs to a maximum of five to six individual audio tracks. Since I envisioned some kind of vocal collage, I didn't play any accompanying instruments. Go to main About Saunatime

What's Next ?

As summer's fleeting days have now grown quite short, I will be returning to the sauna to record the next edition of Saunatunes.

As well, in the Photo Gallery I've introduced my Friday night mates. Actually, we've played and shared a staggering collection of original material for the past twenty-five years.

So, the 'greatest band never known' is planning to record . . . but hopefully not in my sauna! Stay tuned to the Saunatunes website for more on these projects.

Cheers,
David
